Kelcia Nelson Visits the United Nations Headquarters in NYC

About Her First Lesson: A Prevention Blueprint

Kelcia Nelson, founder of Her First Lesson, began developing the initiative through extensive research centered on women’s empowerment, emotional wellness, early intervention education, and the social challenges affecting young girls around the world. The vision behind Her First Lesson was shaped by a growing concern for the number of young women entering adulthood without access to guidance, self-worth education, emotional awareness, or conversations surrounding healthy decision-making and personal development.

The visit to the United Nations also highlighted the importance of creating initiatives that address vulnerability through education rather than waiting until challenges escalate later in life. Through Her First Lesson, the goal is not only to educate young girls, but to help create stronger foundations that encourage self-respect, informed decision-making, economic self-direction, and healthier futures.

Protecting The Girls The World Often Overlooks

During her time in Kampala, Uganda in November 2025, Kelcia Nelson witnessed firsthand the realities

During her time in Kampala, Uganda in November 2025, Kelcia Nelson witnessed firsthand the realities many vulnerable girls face when they grow up without stable support systems, access to opportunity, or consistent emotional and financial care. The experience deepened her understanding of how easily young women can become vulnerable to exploitation, manipulation, and survival-based decision-making when basic needs such as education, meals, mentorship, and stability are uncertain. Since then, Kelcia has personally provided financial support for school supplies, meals, mentorship, and educational assistance to help support vulnerable girls and encourage their growth, confidence, and continued education.

Girls growing up in vulnerable environments are often among the most at risk for exploitation, trafficking, manipulation, unhealthy dependency, and survival-based decision-making. In many cases, the need for love, security, financial support, belonging, or opportunity can make harmful situations appear safe, generous, or necessary.

This is why prevention matters.
